What is a personality disorder?

A personality disorder is a type of mental disorder in which you have a severe and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving. A person with a personality disorder has trouble perceiving and relating to situations and people. This causes significant problems and limitations in relationships, social activities, work and school.

There is a difference between personality disorder and personality trait or style. Personality trait happens time and again, but personality disorder is:

  1. Constantly present; Long term; Chronic; persistent.

  2. The impact it has on a day-to-day life.

  3. The impact it has on the relationship with others and themselves.

  4. Difficulty in regulating emotions.

Each of these disorders has its own range of symptoms, which can range from mild to severe. What these disorders all have in common is the fact that they impact four major aspects of a person’s life:

  • How they think about themselves and other people.

  • The way they experience emotions and respond to others.

  • How they perceive and relate to others.

  • How they interpret, regulate, and control their own behaviors.

A diagnosable personality disorder affects at least two of these areas in a person’s life. Looking closer, you will find that the exact experiences and symptoms vary by individual and disorder.

It is crucial for people to understand that people with the same personality disorder are still unique. They may share common symptoms, emotional responses, and behaviors, but their diagnosis does not define their entire identity.

People can suffer immensely from a personality disorder, but with the right treatment and a willingness to try, they can also heal.

In some cases, you may not realize that you have a personality disorder because your way of thinking and behaving seems natural to you. And you may blame others for the challenges you face.

Personality disorders usually begin in the teenage years or early adulthood. There are many types of personality disorders. Some types may become less obvious throughout middle age.

CLUSTER B PERSONALITY DISORDERS

Cluster B personality disorders are characterized by dramatic, excessively emotional or unpredictable thinking or behavior. They include antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. These personality disorders have problems in regulating emotions. They are forming a category called CUSTTER B PERSONALITY DESORDERS which includes:

  • Anti-social personality disorder

  • Borderline personality disorder

  • Histrionic personality disorder

  • Narcissism

There is no CLUSTER B PERSONALITY DISORDER without childhood abuse. however in the case of borderline there is conclusive proof of brain abnormality, there is also proof of some hereditary genetic component for example if someone close in our family has borderline personality disorder you are five time more likely to have borderline personality disorder so there is genetic component. It is even worse in psychopathy or anti-social personality, where the structural and functional abnormalities in the brain are massive.

All personalities disorder in the clusters B specification are narcissistic:
